It’s good to configure email program to automatically return “Out of Office” notifications to email senders. It will notify you colleges. But, if you can’t set who will receipt this email return, then it also notify spammer that they emailed the right (live) email account. Configure your message replies to recognize only trusted domain addresses or block your notifications outbound at the firewall.

If you home users, better to say “away from the computer right now” than “not at home”, and don’t specify for how long. You don’t want to advertise your absence.
